How to Use FTP on OneControlCenter Print

  • 2396

Using FTP is required for many things such as uploading Minecraft worlds, installing Rust Oxide plugins, adding Starbound mods, and many other tasks that require access to your server files.

MCProHosting has two FTP options available for you to use. The first is our WebFTP available in the control panel, and secondly, you can use your server's FTP credentials to use your favorite FTP client, such as FileZilla. It is strongly recommended that you use FileZilla for larger transfers, such as worlds.

WebFTP

To access the files on your server with WebFTP, you will need to log into your OneControlCenter control panel, select your server and click FTP File Access.

You are now able to browse and edit your server's files inside your browser. By default, you will be brought to your server's base directory, the lowest level of your server (where everything's contained).

Editing Files

To edit a file, such as your server.properties file, click "Edit" next to the file's name, and a text editor will be opened. You can now make the needed changes and click "Save" once you're done and wish to remain with the file open. If you want to save the file then close it click "Save & Close."

Uploading Files

To upload a file to your server, start by browsing the directory to where you would like to upload the files and then click the Upload File(s) button at the top of the WebFTP page. Click Choose Files and locate and select the file or folder that you wish to upload. Once done, click Upload File(s) to confirm the upload. That file or folder will now begin to upload to your server.

Renaming, Downloading, or Deleting Individual Files

If you need to download a specific file to edit locally, simply click the "Download" button found next to a file.

If you need to rename a file to something else, click "Rename" next to the file.

Finally, you can delete a specific file by clicking "Delete" on the far right side of the file.

You are also able to rename and delete folders, but cannot download or edit them.

Downloading Multiple Files (via ZIP)

If you need to download multiple files, you will need to Zip them up.

To do this, use the checkboxes found to the right of the file name and select the files you wish to Zip. The following screenshot shows an example of some selected files.

Once you have selected your files, click "Zip" at the top of the WebFTP. This will open up a modal for you to name your ZIP.

Once set, click "Create Zip File" to create the ZIP. It may take a few minutes to fully ZIP, depending on the size of your files.

Once the ZIP process is complete, you will see it in your files. From here, you can download it. We highly recommend that you delete it once it has been downloaded to save space and remain within our TOS.

Unzipping Files

If you want to upload a ZIP file, you can unzip it through our WebFTP.

First, upload your file using the provided methods (Upload File(s) or through FileZilla).

Once your ZIP has been uploaded, select it by clicking on the checkbox next to your ZIP.

Once you have selected your file, click "Unzip" at the top of your WebFTP. Keep in mind that this may take a few minutes, depending on the size of the ZIP.

Once the unzip process is completed, you will see all of your files in the directory you unzipped them in. We highly recommend deleting the ZIP once it has been downloaded to save space and remain within our TOS.

Deleting Multiple Files

Sometimes you need to delete a lot of files at once. The WebFTP makes this easy!

First, select the files you wish to delete by clicking the checkboxes to the left of the file name.

Once you have selected the files you wish to delete, click "Delete" at the top of the page.

You will be prompted to confirm the deletion. This is permanent, so ensure that you are deleting what you wish to delete.

Click "OK" to confirm the deletion. Once it has been completed, the files will no longer appear in your FTP.

Fetching External Files

If you are given a link to a file, you can use our Fetch feature to add it directly to your server without needing to Download and Upload it yourself.

First, click "Fetch" at the top of your WebFTP. This will open up a modal for you to enter a URL in.

Paste a direct link to a file here. They usually end in the proper extension.

Once you have added the URL, click "Fetch" for it to fetch. Please note it may take a while for larger files. Once it has completed, you will see it in your FTP.

If you do not see it in your FTP, there is a chance it has failed. In this case, you will need to revert to downloading and uploading manually.

Moving Files

If you need to move files to a sub-directory, simply select some files by clicking on the checkbox found to the left of the file name.

Once you have selected the file(s) you wish to move, click "Move" on the top of the WebFTP. A modal will pop up with all possible directories, starting in the root directory.

Navigate to the directory you wish to send the file(s) to by clicking the directory you wish to go into.

Once you have selected the final directory, click "Move Files to [directory]." Once the process has been completed, the modal will close, and the files view will be refreshed. From there, you can manually navigate to the folder to verify it reached its destination.

FTP Client/FileZilla

Our WebFTP is very useful in many scenarios, but it's sometimes better to use a dedicated FTP client to make changes. FTP clients such as FileZilla are often better suited for larger transfers, like world uploads. You may also have a preferred file editor such as NotePad++ or Sublime Text to make changes to the files on your server, in which case, an FTP client would be optimal. You can use an FTP client of your choice with just a few steps!

To access the files on your server with an FTP Client such as FileZilla, you will need to log into your OneControlCenter control panel, select your server and follow these steps:

1. Click FTP File Access on the right sidebar

2. Next, at the top right side of the WebFTP page, click on "FTP Credentials."

3. The page will then drop down and display your FTP Credentials to be used in your preferred FTP client. There are 4 bits of information we'll need to connect, and these are the IP, Port, Username, and Password. The password field will be blurred; you will either want to hover over it and copy or press the blue "Copy Password" button to copy it. In our example, our credentials are as follows:

NOTE: If you experience any issues connecting, ensure you set the port to 555. We do not use the standard "21" port.

4. Now, we will populate our settings on our FTP Client. In our example, we're using FileZilla

Once your settings are filled out, hit "Quickconnect," and you'll be connected to your server!

NOTE: If you are prompted with a warning similar to "This server does not support FTP over TLS," you can safely ignore this error and press "OK."

FileZilla works in a similar way that our WebFTP does. However, instead of having buttons to alter files, you right-click them. That's it!

Once you finish editing, you will be prompted to upload the files.

Be sure to click Yes so the changes apply.
